Cove news

A huge thank you to Westhaven Special School, Sanders Garden World and Hutton Garden Centre who have donated soil, plants and seeds in order to develop our sensory garden. πŸ™‚ The children have stared planting already.

πŸŒΈπŸƒπŸŒ» A huge thank you from The Cove - 18th May 2022 πŸŒ»πŸƒπŸŒΈ
A few weeks ago, The Cove received a very generous gift to start them off with their sensory garden and garden therapy. With the help of Mr L, the children are now starting to plant up the flower beds and planters around The Cove. This is such a lovely opportunity for the children to enhance their own learning environment and take responsibility for maintains it. We are sure that over the coming months we will see the plants flourish.

We are so grateful to Sanders Garden Centre, Westhaven Special School and Hutton Garden Centre for their generosity, guidance and kindness.

Term 5 - 5th May 2022

The Cove

We can't quite believe that we are already in Term 5! The time is flying by which shows how much fun we have been having (and how hard we have been working too)! This term we are focusing on the changes which happen in spring. We are learning about life cycles and the text we are working on this term is a wonderful story called 'The Woolly Bear Caterpillar' by Julia Donaldson. Very soon we will also be having some caterpillars in The Cove so that we can watch the life cycle unfold before our eyes! We have enjoyed spending more time in our outside space whilst we have had some sunshine and will be planting some flowers over the next few weeks.

This month Miss Baker went to the North Somerset Parent Carers Working Together event and was able to showcase The Cove to parents in the local area. We also have more information on our website now about our provision with our very own video featuring the children giving a tour and information about a typical day in 'Cove life'- Please take a look!

Over the next two terms we look forward to welcoming new children who will be joining The Cove in September.

Term 4 - 31st March 2022

Pure Nurture

So far in Nurture, the children have been learning about being kind to themselves and to be proud of things they have achieved. They have also been learning to focus on the little things around them and use this as a technique to help them calm down when they have become dysregulated. The children have also been learning about how their bodies react when they are feeling different emotions and noticing when this is happening to them. They have been really enthusiastic about learning the calming techniques and are really trying to notice when they are feeling dysregulated and trying to use those techniques to help themselves.

Term 4 - 18th March 2022

Hearing and Language Resource Base

Over the last few weeks, we have been using the beautiful picture book ‘Once upon a Snowstorm’ by Richard Johnson to develop our winter themed vocabulary. We found so much to talk about when looking at the pictures and built up our descriptive vocabulary. As a treat, we also followed instructions to make hot chocolate on a cold winter day.

The end of the story (which always brings a tear to Mrs Barton’s eye) has led us nicely into spring. Our focus will be on sequencing events and stories and writing about life cycles.

Term 4 - 3rd March 2022

Mrs Webber - Smart Moves
The children have loved taking part in weekly motor skills development sessions. We have had great fun and they have made brilliant progress. Last term, we focused on developing balance - for example using different body parts to balance on the floor and apparatus.  We developed our spacial awareness in fun ways such as playing balloon tennis and mirroring our partner’s positions. As we move towards the summer term, we will be working on ball skills and focusing on hand-eye coordination.

Term 3 - 10th February 2022

Sunshine Morning Nurture Group - Mrs Hewlett & Mrs Griffiths

In our morning nurture group, we are sequencing the days of the week and learning the day before and the day after.  We are also talking all about months and seasons of the year.

This week we have been trying to develop our independence and resilience by independently completing challenge puzzles set by the grown-ups.

We are continually working on our independence and social skills through turn taking, maths, literacy and crafting activities, and through role play.

Term 3 - 27th January 2022

Bucket Time with Mrs Marsh

As we are in the winter months, many of our bucket time activities this term have reflected the colder and frostier mornings! This week, the children were excited to see which items were in the bucket. Out came the dancing lady and the popping smiley face!  The group focused on these items brilliantly and did an excellent job of not touching the items, only using their eyes to watch. The children then waited patiently for their turn in the activity “flying snowballs.” The children showed great excitement to see the snowball fly out of the launcher, followed by a flurry of sparkly snow!

Term 3 - 12th January 2022

Cognition and Learning Groups: Mrs Findlay and Ms. Buttery

Last term, we had great fun reading, writing and following instructions carefully to make biscuits (Mrs. Findlay’s group) and balloon rockets (Mrs. Buttery’s group). Not only did Mrs. Findlay’s group get very sticky fingers, but also, Mrs. Buttery’s group had a lot of fun racing their balloon rockets across the classroom! This term, we are reading all about Harry Stevenson and his many adventures. We are learning how to write a formal letter and then later in the term, we are going to write a non-chronological report about guinea pigs. If you have any books about guinea pigs at home, the children are welcome to bring them into school to help them with their research. On another note, we would like to congratulate all our children with regards to their cursive handwriting as they have improved greatly! The children show resilience and a positive attitude to learning and are working towards becoming more independent within our groups.

Term 2 - 17th December 2021

Speech & Language - Mrs Baker and Miss Pennington

In our speech and language groups this term, we’ve been exploring lots of lovely texture and Christmas vocabulary. We have been using this new vocabulary to describe objects and we have also been practising our attention and listening skills.

In our Sing and Sign group, we have been learning lots of new rhymes and songs. I wonder if you have heard any at home?

Our Talk Boost group children have all done amazingly well and have now received their certificates!

Please keep an eye out on the Mendip Green forum for the annual Christmas Makaton signed video, created by Miss Pennington and performed by people who live, work and offer support services within our community, you may spot some familiar faces from around school!

The SEND Team wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Term 2 - 11th November 2021

SEND Updates 2020 - 2021

Term 3 - 16th January 2020

What a great start to Term 3! So far this term in Speech and Language group the children have been working on identifying sounds in a variety of ways. This has involved lots of barrier games and even hunting for the sounds using torches!  We are hoping to arrange some more SEND parent gatherings over the next few terms. If there is anyone who knows of any SEND charities/speakers who would be willing to come and talk/share information at one of these please could you contact Miss Baker via the school office.

Term 2 - 28th November 2019

Thank you to those who attended our Makaton Christmas Workshop.  We shall have more planned after the new year, as well as our SEND coffee mornings.  If anyone has any contacts of outside agencies or charities who would be willing to come and present at these, please could you contact me via the school office. – Miss Baker.

Term 2 - 14th November 2019

Makaton Christmas Signing - Parent Session

Some of you may remember that last year Miss Ali Pennington one of our very talented Learning Support Assistants delivered a 'Makaton Taster' session for parents. Myself and Miss Pennington have organised another session based on Christmas signs. We would like to invite parents on Wednesday 26th November 1:30-3pm. There are 15 spaces available on a 'first come first serve' basis. If you would like to attend please contact the school office who will confirm your place.

Term 1 - 22nd October 2019

HLRB (Hearing and Language Resource Base) News!

This September we welcomed three new pupils to the base and now support eleven children across the school.  The children are working on the same topics as their peers so we are covering many different themes.  Our additional language and literacy focus has been ‘Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?’  This has involved listening to and retelling a range of stories about wolves, extending our vocabulary and finding our wolf facts.  A great first term for everyone.  Well done!

Term 1 - 10th October 2019

Sunshine News!

We have been very busy in Sunshine since the beginning of term. We’ve shared big book stories of ‘Dear Zoo’ and ‘The Gruffalo’ followed by craft sessions - making lions and other animals featured in the books. The children have enjoyed learning lots of new Makaton signs - lion being the firm favourite! We have been caring for and looking after our baby dolls, feeding them, changing their nappies and clothes and remembering to be ever so gentle when cuddling and wrapping them in blankets. We have been learning new rhymes and doing lots of activities around feelings.  The children LOVE our big mirror and we’ve had lots of fun making faces to match feelings.  We’ve also been making funny faces to practise speech sounds. We had great fun last week with a bubble themed session, listening to and giving instructions on blowing bubbles using Makaton signs and symbols, followed by a VERY messy INCREDIBLY fun bubble paint blowing activity.  The children loved this so much.  Their laughter was infectious! Bucket time began in the second week of term.  All the children are really focused and thoroughly enjoying the lovely activities bucket time brings.

Term 1 - 12th September 2019

Over the summer holidays we have had some very exciting building work completed! We have had an additional intervention room space built within the Sunshine Room in order to personalise the curriculum for a greater number of children across the school. The small room at the end of the KS2 corridor has become a designated Speech and Language Room which Mrs Mandy Baker and Miss Alison Pennington will be using to provide a wider breadth of directed Speech and Language across the school, delivering groups and 1:1 sessions. It has also been lovely to see our new HLRB and EYFS children settle in so well over the past week.
