Year 2 & 4 class-mixing
Thu 21 May 2020Dear Parents/Carers,
I am sure that you are already aware that we consider mixing classes at the end of Year 2 and Year 4 each year.
There is often a benefit in mixing classes to balance gender, ability, additional needs and personalities. It’s also good for children to experience at least one transition whilst in the safe and familiar environment of primary school - it can stand them in good stead.
This year, given the present pandemic and after careful consideration, we have decided NOT to mix classes ahead of September. It is our opinion that to do so would create an additional layer of uncertainty for children, which would not be in their best interests.
We will revisit the situation at the end of next year (ie Y3 & Y5) and, if we feel that it would be beneficial, we will communicate this to you at this time.
If you have any questions or queries then please do not hesitate to contact me.
With best wishes,
James Oakley

Reopening School
Wed 13 May 2020Wednesday 13th May 2020
Dear Parents/Carers,
I am sure that by now you will have seen the government's announcement regarding schools reopening, possibly as soon as 1st June 2020. The announcement presented us with many questions. Currently we are working with a range of experts and seeking further advice from the DFE to ensure that reopening is done safely. Education is important but, as a trust/school, pupil and staff wellbeing has always been at the top of our agenda and this present challenge will not compromise our priorities. In short, we do the right thing.
What we know so far:
- We know you will have seen in the news that schools may reopen from 1 June to Reception, year 1 and year 6 pupils if the government thinks it’s safe then to do so.
- Schools in England currently remain closed for most pupils except for the children of critical workers and vulnerable children.
- All our schools have remained open to those identified children. We plan to continue this provision for all year groups.
In preparation for wider opening we will be consulting with parents and carers. To enable this, we will issue a survey to capture your views and provide us with specific information required prior to opening
We don't know yet:
- When the government will confirm the date for the phased reopening of schools.
- How schools will operate in terms of the school day and classroom allocation to maintain safety recommendations.
- The exact health and safety measures that will be put in place.
- How many children will make up a group as this is dependent on the needs of specific year groups, available space and staff.
- How this affects key worker children.
We are waiting for further clarification and guidance from the Department for Education. Once received, detailed information will be communicated to you.
Our Estates Lead is consulting with site teams, other schools and external experts to ensure all necessary steps are taken to provide a safe site for all.
If you have any questions or concerns you would like to share please do not hesitate to contact me, either by e-mail or by phone (details above).
We would like to thank you for your continued support in helping your child learn from home. We will need to keep going with this for a while, so please continue to do what you can and stay in touch with us.
With best wishes to you and your loved ones,
James Oakley - Headteacher

Free School Meal Provision During Closure
Wed 08 Apr 2020From Monday 20th April we will begin using the government’s Free School Meal Voucher Distribution Scheme. This replaces our current weekly food pack scheme for entitled families. We believe that these vouchers will provide families with a greater flexibility of food choice to meet the needs of their children during this period.
Families entitled to free school meals will receive a £15 grocery voucher per child every week, term time only.
If you think your child may qualify for free school meals please contact the school or register here https://nsod.n-somerset.gov.uk/kb5/northsomerset/directory/fsm_app_landing.page
Further information can be found here:
We are open throughout the holidays and here to support you, should you need it.
Thank you very much for your continued support and understanding during these incredibly challenging times. Like you, we have been coming to terms with the new world in which we are living and really appreciate your continued kindness.

Childcare for Crtical Workers
Tue 24 Mar 2020Following the Prime Minister’s announcement last night regarding the closure of many workplaces and the need to stay at home wherever possible, we understand that for many of our entitled parents and carers their childcare needs may have changed.
In order to maintain childcare places for the children of critical workers and protect the children and staff, we would ask that you contact us by phone and inform us if you have booked childcare sessions that you no longer require.
Phone: 01934 513791 (please leave a message on the absence line out of office hours)
Email: info@mgps.n-somerset.sch.uk
Alternatively, if you require additional sessions please log onto ParentPay and book your sessions.
Please can we ask that:
- If you do not have a ParentPay account, you call to confirm your childcare needs for the week, as soon as you know them.
- If you have a Parent Pay account, you book the sessions required, even if we have had a phone conversation with you.
This will enable us to ensure only staff that are needed are in school and that shifts and rotas are adjusted to keep everyone as safe as possible.
Please look after yourselves and stay safe.
